Post & Beam construction incorporates the use of exposed beams supported by posts (we use architectural grade Douglas Fir glulam beams as a standard) that run horizontal in order to structurally support the roof rafters overhead and the sub floor systems, and then connected by metal bolts and brackets. This form of construction combined with conventional framing, will cost at least 20% more than a standard conventional sub floor and roof system that uses trusses and 50% less materials.
Timber frame is an Old World/Medieval method of construction and in our authentic timber frame homes, the complete frame work is comprised of a series of exposed and connected bents (framework assembled from post & beam timbers). The giant sized crafted truss systems are supported by exposed timber posts, connected and secured with oak pegs and mortisse & tenon joinery instead of bolts and brackets.
We differ from other timber frame companies in that we manufacture our timber frames by a computer controlled machine that precisionly cuts each section and bent. The timbers are available in eastern white pine or Douglas Fir and are then all planed, camfered, finished with a Danish oil treatment, and supplied with curved knee braces. The average cost of a timber frame home kit will be about double the cost of the comparable post & beam.
Look into our custom cedar homes building system "The Cedar Designs advantages." Cedar Designs' custom construction team and interior design experts can modify any timber frame home to that of a true post and beam home or combine both construction styles.
